ACTRESS Rose McIver is a big fan of New Zealand fashion. She wore a custom-made dress by Auckland designer Juliette Hogan to the London premiere of The Lovely Bones, sat front row at several shows at NZ Fashion Week earlier this year, and was a special guest at the launch of the Moet & Chandon Lounge, where she signed a very special handcrafted gold leaf jeroboam of champagne that was to be auctioned off for Oxfam— while wearing another Juliette Hogan dress. Like Hogan, McIver has a penchant for the feminine . . .although she describes her style as ‘‘temperamental’’.
Who are your favourite designers?
Juliette Hogan, her pieces celebrate strong femininity. And with the latest range she has brought in some edgier stuff to mix it up. I like Stolen Girlfriends Club for their originality and am a fan of Kathryn Wilson’s diverse, striking shoe collections. I’m also excited about the latest stuff from Ruby and Madame Hawke; looking forward to buying a few pieces.
What is your favourite decade, style-wise?
The 1960s. Tailored and womanly but with a little more bite.
What was the last item of clothing you bought?
A new pair of running shorts.
What item of clothing do you want to buy next?
With the warmer weather kicking in, I’m on the lookout for nice swimwear.
Who or what inspires you when dressing?
Women who dress sometimes for comfort and sometimes for glamour, and with the exact same confidence either way.
What’s the one thing everyone should have in their wardrobe?
Hand-knitted slippers. Pick them up from your local craft market.
Your favourite shop? The Red Cross in Hawera, so many gems and they don’t have ‘‘vintage’’ price tags!
What is your beauty routine?
Face and body moisturise after every shower.
Whose wardrobe would you most like to raid?
Danielle Cormack’s. I’ve done it before and I’ll do it again. She’s a fantastic hoarder and you can find pretty much anything in there.
You feel best wearing?
The friendship bracelets I collected throughout high school. I always have them on for most of summer.
Your favourite accessory?
A Marc Jacobs handbag.
Most cherished item?
The gown Juliette Hogan designed for me to wear to The Lovely Bones premiere in London last year.
Favourite fashion-y movie?
Who is your ultimate fashion plate?
It would depend on the day you asked me. I like a bunch of people’s style including Brigitte Bardot, actress Carey Mulligan, Madeleine Sami, all sorts.
Describe the best outfit you’ve ever worn.
I dressed as an elephant to a friend’s jungle-themed birthday. I had a trunk made from a stocking that was sprayed grey, ears made from fairy wings (also sprayed) and a size 3XL grey T-shirt from the Warehouse. Teamed up with leggings, furry grey slippers and covered in grey face/body paint, it was a treat.
