Netflix’s A Christmas Prince is a holiday franchise with a huge cult following. But even diehard fans may have missed these errors and hidden details.
In 2017, Netflix released A Christmas Prince, one of its first feature holiday films. The cutesy, Hallmark-esque movie ended up striking gold and attracting a cult following. The fairytale premise follows an average girl from New York falling in love and getting into a relationship with a foreign prince. Thanks to Rose McIver and Ben Lamb’s performances, Netflix went on to produce a sequel called A Christmas Prince: A Royal Wedding. And just like its predecessor, fans wanted more. What was next for the new King and Queen of Aldovia?
Earlier this month, Netflix dropped the third film revolving around the arrival of Amber and Richard’s first child. All three movies have a touch of whimsy and a whole lot of mystery. However, they also have their own goofs and little details most fans didn’t pick up on.
THE CHRISTMAS PRINCE WAS FILMED IN ROMANIA
All Christmas Prince films are set in the fictional country of Aldovia. Since they take place around Christmastime, we usually see the castle, streets, and woods covered in snow. The snowy landscape and deep forest create a similar aesthetic to Disney’s Beauty and the Beast’s winter scene.
Knowing Aldovia isn’t a real country, Netflix filmed a majority of A Christmas Prince in Sinaia, Romania. You can actually visit Peles Castle, the castle used for filming, in the Carpathian Mountains.
POP? IS THAT YOU?
One of the biggest differences in all the films is the role of Amber’s dad, whom she calls “Pop.” In A Christmas Prince, Pop was portrayed by Daniel Fathers. However, he was recast for the second and third movies, with John Guerrasio taking on the role. The two men are noticeably different from one another in looks, voice, and personality, so to make the obvious known, Emily states, “He looks different from how he seemed in Amber’s pictures.” He even says “I feel like a brand-new person!”
LADY SOPHIA’S DRESS LOOKS FAMILIAR…
In the first film, Lady Sophia is thrown in the mix to give Amber a run for her money. As the former girlfriend of Richard, Lady Sophia thought she was the perfect person to share his royal life. She fit in perfectly and knew the drill. Amber, on the other hand, not so much.
However, in the opening scene, we see Amber’s boss tell her she’s going on an assignment to Aldovia to find everything she can on Prince Richard. On the homepage one website, we see Lady Sophia in the bottom right-hand corner. Funnily enough, at Richard’s coronation ball, she’s wearing the exact same outfit and hairstyle. Wearing a ballgown twice in the same year does not seem like something a royal would do.
WAS AMBER BASED ON PRINCESS MEGHAN?
When you stop and think about it, the relationship between Amber and Richard is very similar to Meghan and Harry, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Amber and Meghan both ran blogs, were both non-royals, and both made their relationships known in 2017. They were both married in 2018. And they both had royal babies in 2019.
WEREN’T THEY SUPPOSED TO BE IN NEW YORK CITY?
In the opening scene of the first film, we see aerial views of New York City. There are noticeable landmarks in the wintertime, with snow slowly drifting downward, making viewers realize it’s the holiday season.
However, in one quick shot we can see Chicago flags waving in the wind, proving that some filming did not, in fact, take place in NYC.
AMBER, YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS
Before Amber became the Queen of Aldovia, she was a journalist and a junior editor for a firm in New York. Now, if you work in media, don’t you think you would know how to use a cell phone camera? You don’t even need to be a professional to know how to do this! Yet, in the second film, Rudy is getting Emily in the Christmas spirit by making snow angels with her in the forest. When Amber goes to take a picture of the moment, her finger is completely covering her phone’s lens. She even looks at the photo to make sure it’s good and appears to be satisfied — even though it’s just a picture of her finger.
A LITTLE PIECE OF THE CAST IS SHOWN AT THE BABY SHOWER
After a treaty goes missing in A Christmas Prince: A Royal Baby, the palace is on lockdown until they find who took it. Due to the severity of the situation and Amber’s stress (not to mention a massive snowstorm), her baby shower is canceled. To help calm her, the baby shower ends up going on as planned and is decorated beautifully. We even see a big board of the guests and their accompanying baby picture. And just in case you couldn’t tell, they used real baby pictures of the cast and crew to make this board even more special.
IS AUSTRIA IN THE SAME UNIVERSE AS ALDOVIA?
Thanks to Netflix’s A Christmas Prince being set in Aldovia, we then saw other Netflix Christmas movies set in other fictional, faraway lands. However, if Aldovia is a fictional country, does that mean that the surrounding countries are all fictional as well? And if other countries are, in fact, fake, then they need to explain why Empress Elisabeth of Austria is painted in the picture behind Richard. Is Austria a part of this crazy Netflix world?
MAJOR COOKIE FAIL
Adorably, in A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding, Emily has her friends over to the palace for a cookie-making party. The kids are running around, excited from all the sugar they’re eating. We then see Emily designing her cookies with the help of her crush, Tom. After touching her little nose, Tom realizes she has icing all over it. When we first see the icing, it’s on the left side of her body. As the camera moves, we then see it’s on her right side. But when Tom helped her clean it off, it was magically on the center of her nose. Whoops!
AN INSIDE JOKE THAT’S ON THE OUTSIDE
Once Amber is given the Prince Richard assignment, she Googles him to find out everything she can about this soon-to be king. Under the headline “Does Price Richard Have a New Secret Girlfriend? A fan on IMDb noticed the blurb is simply of a hodge-podge of words: “He as compliment unreserved projecting. Between bad observe pretend delight for believe. Do newspaper questions consulted sweetness do. Remark fat set why are sudden depend change entire wanted. Performed remainder attending led fat residence for.”
