Kicking ass and taking brains … Brain Appétit !
Creators: Diane Ruggiero, Rob Thomas
Genre: Comedy | Crime | Drama | Horror | Sci-Fi – “zom-dram-rom-com”
Country of Origin: USA
Premiere date: 17 March 2015 (USA)
Episode lenght: 42 minutes

Olivia “Liv” Moore (Rose McIver) was a rosy-cheeked, disciplined, over-achieving medical resident who had her life path completely mapped out…. until the night she attended a party that unexpectedly turned into a zombie feeding frenzy. As one of the newly undead, Liv is doing her best to blend in and look as human as possible. Her appearance now passes for “Goth,” with shockingly pale skin and nearly white hair, and her demeanor has gone from exuberant to exhausted.

The change in Liv is baffling to her mother (Nora Dunn), her former fiancé, Major (Robert Buckley), and her best friend and roommate, Peyton (Alexandra Krosney), who still has the high-energy, Type-A personality that Liv has completely abandoned. Despite her post-traumatic ennui, Liv has devised a way to resist her baser urges to devour fresh human brains – she’s taken a job in the Seattle coroner’s office. In this appropriately dead-end job, Liv can secretly snack on the brains of the many Jane and John Doe corpses that make a final stop in the morgue.

Despite carefully covering her tracks, Liv’s boss, Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti (Rahul Kohli), discovers her secret and is surprisingly excited about the scientific possibilities. Even with her boss’ enthusiasm, Liv remains resigned to an eternity without hope or purpose, until she realizes that with every brain she consumes, she retains a portion of that person’s memories. Liv begins to experience visions from the point of view of the murder victims.

Much to the surprise of Dr. Ravi and homicide detective Clive Babineaux (Malcolm Goodwin), Liv often has detailed knowledge of crime scenes and motives that she can’t easily explain. Posing as a psychic, she works with Detective Babineaux to investigate these crimes and discover who is responsible. It’s not the same as being alive again, but at least Liv can find purpose in her undead existence by helping Clive solve the murders of those who are indeed fully dead.

Olivia Moore

Olivia “Liv” Moore, M.D. is the main protagonist of iZombie. She is a medical resident who died and woke up as a zombie. As a result, she must feed on brains to survive. She took a job at the King County Medical Examiner’s Office in order to have access to the brains she needs. With each brain eaten, she absorbs new memories and traits. She then begins to solve the deaths of the victims whose brains she’s eaten. With the help of her boss, Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti, the only one who knows her secret. She also turns to Seattle PD Detective Clive Babineaux whom thinks these visions Liv has are psychic powers.

Episode Guide

Check out our complete and in-depth episode guide, with information, media and much more on every single iZombie episode below. Our guide is divided by seasons – click the season you want to learn more about below.

  • Theme song is “Stop, I’m Already Dead” performed by Deadboy & the Elephantmen (Listen to it here in our audio archive).
  • It is a loose adaptation of the comic book series of the same name created by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred, and published by DC Comics’ Vertigo.
  • Rose McIver (Liv) and David Anders (Blaine) were both on Once Upon a Time (2011) as minor characters. McIver was Tinker Bell and Anders was Dr.Whale/Frankenstein.
  • The character “Liv Moore” is based on the protagonist of the Vertigo comics, “iZombie”. In the comics, the character’s name is, “Gwen Dylan”.
  • The character “Major Lillywhite” is named after Major Applewhite, who was a Univesity of Texas quarterback. The University of Texas is Rob Thomas’s alma mater.
  • During one of the episodes, Lowell and Liv are talking about tanning and one of Lowell’s lines (“I can’t pull off that Tinkerbell look as you do”) is a reference to a role Rose McIver had in Once Upon a Time (2011) where she portrayed Tinkerbell in season 3 of the series in 2013.
  • Guest stars Percy Daggs III, Daran Norris and Ryan Hansen have worked with Rob Thomas on the TV series Veronica Mars (2004) and the movie Veronica Mars (2014).
  • On iZombie episode “The Exterminator” they used a handful of names of former Seattle Supersonics for the episode’s character’s names. Included were Marvin Webster, Wally Walker, Fred Brown, Gus Williams and Don Watts (known widely as Slick Watts).
  • David Anders (Blaine) also plays a zombie in the movie, The Revenant.
  • Aly Michalka’s second CW show. This time she is a reccuring character rather than a regular.
  • The series is set in Seattle, Washington, while in comics, it’s set in Eugene, Oregon.
  • The girl in the morgue is called “Stephanie Germanotta”, which is actually the singer Lady Gaga’s real name.
  • Memories can’t be recovered from long dead brain matter, the brain after a few minutes would begin to break down, including the neurons, making memories unrecoverable. So, a brain after it’s been dead for hours would not be able to give out any memories like it is shown when one is “eaten”.

Here you can read quotes from the cast members (and others) about the show. Note that episode quotes will be on the episode pages, and not listed here.

“I think iZombie is more like Buffy than Veronica Mars was like Buffy. Veronica was very real world. There were no monsters in it. There was not a lot of action or violence in it. iZombie will have a bit more of that. Veronica Mars, we were really serious about trying to write great mysteries and spending a lot of our beats and story points on that. I think on iZombie, we’re going to spend a little more time trying to get to fun zombie moments. We don’t want it just to be a “zombie solves a murder case,” each week. We want there to be a real, zombie mythology and zombie story lines. I would say in Veronica Mars there was always a big murder case that encompassed the season. In iZombie, there’s a big zombie storyline that will sort of serve as the same role. ” – Rob Thomas

“So, so far we’re aiming to eat a brain an episode. It’s sort of the goal. And we’ve been playing around with different recipes on set. We haven’t quite mastered it. We have like a fondant, icing very, very sweet saccharine kind of brain. And then we also have a soy protein one, that’s like tofu. Wouldn’t recommend them. We’re working on it, but yeah we get through quite a lot on set. ” – Rose McIver

“I have a new best friend on set called a spit bucket. So I actually don’t eat any of them (the brains) really anymore. I go to craft services and get a lot of gum. And in between these soy protein meals, I spit them out and have chewing gum and freshen up.” – Rose McIver

“Liv Moore was a medical student before she got attacked. She had this desire to help people. She really had a social purpose that she lost when she had to take another job working elsewhere, so she could eat brains. And when she discovers that she’s able to eat the brains and help solve the crimes and bring some justice to those who have died. I think it just gives her more of a sense of purpose. And we’re all looking for that identity and that just happens to be where Liv finds it. In a very unlikely place. ” – Rose McIver
